Krista Mölder’s solo exhibition “The Blue Bird”

Tartu Art House Vanemuise 26, 51014 Tartu Wed–Mon 12.00–18.00 www.kunstimaja.ee www.facebook.com/kunstimaja

From Monday, 3 May Krista Mölder’s solo exhibition “The Blue Bird. To the Other Me” will be open in the large gallery of the Tartu Art House.

The limits of photography are set by the human vision. Mölder plays with these limits, tests them like a foot testing the water: entering it, letting herself be enveloped by it. The water is tepid, almost the temperature of the body. Therefore the crossing of the line, the change of the environment, is barely perceptible. Impossible to place.

The artist has turned light, the tool of photography, into the substance of her work. Traditional substances – objects, surfaces and forms; the solid matter that reflects light as colours – have abandoned their resistance: like the surface of water that the foot wants to test.

Mist, glittering sunshine and water; white walls and glass; the membrane-like wings of butterflies and the breeze from an open window: the light penetrates all of it, the light is at the bottom of it. It is beautiful like death. A well-known fact: photography is the harbinger of death (Roland Barthes). All of the views that have been photographed only subsist inside their white frames: the mist fades, the wave crashes onto the shore and tomorrow the sun will shine from another angle. Light and death are the beginning and end of photography: the same needle that pricked the whole into the camera obscura turns a butterfly into a museum exhibit. Photography is a view finished off in the light.

The text that accompanies the exhibition is written by Anti Saar.

The exhibition will remain open until 23 May. During this time, the Tartu Art House is open every day 12–18.
