Krishna Luchoomun is a multidisciplinary artist based in Mauritius. His work explores traditions, mythologies, religions, politics, and contemporary social behaviours to examine the relationship between humans and their immediate environment. His art delves into the essence of being human and the inherent desire for connection—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—with other people and the natural world.
In this body of work, he explores the realities of today's world, marred by the horrors of war, the ongoing slaughter of innocent lives, lost generations, and communities torn apart. War destroys buildings that could be reconstructed, but it grotesquely inflicts irreparable despair and loss on humanity, leaving deep scars on the collective psyche of nations that echo through generations.
Hands, a highly expressive part of the body, are used in gestures we see daily on television and social media. Like a silent cry, they implore protection, food, and help. Symbols of connection, creation, love, and protection, the hands here bear witness to suffering, despair, and a plea for mercy in the face of hopelessness.
