"As Above, So Below", is a collaborative exhibition combining the works of Charlotte Biszewski and Sarah Epping in the evocative world of printmaking. Charlotte Biszewski's expansive woodcuts take us on a stellar journey, mapping the heavens as inspired by ancient astronomy. These star maps are not mere depictions but evoke the narratives and awe our ancestors felt beneath the celestial canopy. Contrastingly, Sarah Epping's etchings plunge us beneath the waves. Using the nuanced technique of chine collé, she unveils an aquatic ballet of blooming plants and the human mark on the natural world, capturing the delicate dance of life submerged. Together, these works create a dialogue between the vastness above and the mysteries below, inviting viewers to explore the dual wonders of our existence. For each star that sparkles overhead, there's a bloom resonating in the deep, reminding us of the intricate tapestry of life.
Sarah Epping is an American print artist and painter living and working in Estonia. Her Phd at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design entitled ‘Narcosis’ was greatly inspired by Estonian art and nature. During the past 5 years she has participated in more than 80 international exhibitions and received honorable mentions in two national Polish competitions in 2019 and was deemed a Laureate of the Jerzy Grotowski Award in Wrocław, Poland. Her works have been acquired by many museums and private persons, the most notable of which are the China Printmaking Museum in Guanlin and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Wroclaw, Poland. As of 2022 she is a member of Eesti Vabagraafikute Ühendus and is working in the field of data analysis in Tallinn, Estonia.
Charlotte Biszewski is a British printmaker living in Tartu, she works as a lecturer at EKA, as well as the director of TYPA MTÜ. She has 12 years of experience working within the field of printmaking and historical print research. Her work plays with the industrial heritage of printmaking and combines the handmade with contemporary technology, adapting the tools of the classical printmakers. She completed a Ph.D. at the Academy of Fine Arts Eugeniusz Geppert, in Wrocław, in digital and experimental print. Her awards include the Rebecca Smith Award for fine-art printmaking, the David Cantor Memorial Award for printmaking, and the Grotowski Prize for best Ph.D. in the field of art, in Wrocław.
